Home of the Urner-Barry Publishing Company from circa-1937 to around 1966 or 1967. The company moved to this location from their former building on Chambers St. The large newsprint printing presses were on the West half of the first floor, and reception/secretarial staff were located in the east half of the first floor. The smaller presses (I think) were on the second floor, along with the furnace for melting type metal, linotype machines, and the composing room for assembling the lines of type into forms for each page. Editorial offices were on the third floor, and business operations were on the fourth floor - circulation records, envelope stuffing, etc. Fifth floor was used for storage of large rolls of paper for the presses. The elevator was in the east half of the building, and was fully manual, with sliding metal accordion doors.
